Fox Point Lake Water Quality Monitoring Dataset

Map and Visualize

The Fox Point Lake Water Quality Monitoring Committee was appointed by the Municipality of the District of Chester in
2014, in response to ongoing concerns about the water quality of Fox Point Lake and the Aspotogan Ridge development
project in Mill Cove, NS. Aspotogan Ridge will be a 550-acre family lifestyle community, with the construction of over
500 residential units and an 18-hole golf course planned over the next several years. Residents of Fox Point Lake have
documented several siltation run-off events in the lake during construction of the golf course, leading to concerns over
the impacts of the development project on the health of Fox Point Lake and its drainage basin.

The Water Quality Monitoring Committee was tasked with developing a Water Quality Monitoring Program to document the
baseline water quality conditions of Fox Point Lake and track any changes in the health of the lake over the course of
the development project. In 2015, Bluenose Coastal Action Foundation was contracted to develop this monitoring program,
provide training and assistance to a group of volunteers, and to analyze and report on the water quality results of the
initial monitoring period and subsequent years. Monitoring of the lake and its inlet and outlet streams has taken place
from May to October of each year since 2015.

This program is funded by the Municipality of the District of Chester and the Aspotogan Heritage Trust and supported by
a dedicated group of volunteers.

Data Collection Information

A YSI probe (YSI Professional Plus) is used to collect in-situ data from 4 sample sites on a bi-weekly to monthly basis. In addition, water samples are collected monthly for analysis at an accredited laboratory. Stream discharge rates are monitored at the stream sites using a velocimeter, while Secchi disk depth and temperature/dissolved oxygen profiles are measured at the lake site. Daily observations of lake water level and precipitation amounts are recorded using a staff gauge and rainfall gauge, respectively. Monitoring equipment is calibrated and maintained by Coastal Action staff.
