The Couchiching Conservancy: Community Science Water Monitoring Program

Water quality data are collected by trained community scientists who volunteer for the Couchiching Conservancy. Data are collected using tools in the LaMotte Water Quality Educator and Monitoring Outfit, which contains kits to test for a variety of water quality parameters. Conductivity probes, and lab grade analyses are occasionally used. Long term trends are tracked and logged on the Water Rangers data platform.

Data Collection Information

Water quality data are collected by trained community scientists. Data are collected using tools in the LaMotte Water Quality Educator and Monitoring Outfit, including pH, dissolved oxygen, alkalinity, turbidity, phosphate, Nitrate-nitrogen, and chlorides. Water level and temperature were also monitored using a meter stick and mercury thermometer. Occasionally, samples were sent away for lab grade analysis of phosphates and nitrate-nitrogen to verify results. In 2023, volunteers began using the water rangers conductivity probe at their sites.

QA/QC performed by Couchiching Conservancy staff or volunteers as well as Water Rangers staff or volunteers.
