Wolastoq (Saint John River) Community-Based Temperature Monitoring Data

Monitoring locations were selected based on filling spatial gaps in the existing temperature monitoring network, by selecting a range of stream size and temperature classifications using the Nature Conservancy of Canada’s Freshwater Stream Classifications, and in consultation with local community groups. The data will be useful for thermal modelling, fish habitat assessment, evaluation of diurnal (i.e. daily) fluctuations, comparison to guidelines for aquatic species, and many other anticipated uses. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) provided data logger equipment on long-term loan as well as technical advice on proposed monitoring locations, data logger setup, and deployment techniques. Atlantic Water Network (AWN) provided coordination and advice to community groups on the data uploading procedure for Atlantic DataStream. Community groups provided staff and volunteers to deploy and maintain the data loggers, to download the data, and to upload the data to Atlantic DataStream.

Data Collection Information

In-situ temperature data loggers are deployed and are used to collect temperature data on an hourly basis for most sites. Data are downloaded on a regular basis (e.g. monthly) by community groups using a field laptop or with a smartphone using Bluetooth technology. A macro developed by Atlantic Water Network allows the raw data logger files to be converted to Atlantic DataStream format and uploaded by community groups collecting the data. A document outlining data logger set-up and deployment techniques was developed to ensure consistency.
