Water Quality Monitoring of Regional Rivers (Northeast Avalon)

Map and Visualize

Northeast Avalon ACAP (NAACAP) completed a three year Water Quality Monitoring of Regional Rivers project on the Northeast Avalon, representing 43 watersheds where continuous monitoring had not previously been completed. Training and equipment from Saint Mary’s University CURA H2O and Community Based Environmental Monitoring Network facilitated data collection by NAACAP and community partners: Kelligrews Ecological Enhancement Program (KEEP), The Quidi Vidi/Rennie’s River Development Foundation, and the Manuels River Experience. Ongoing community based sampling efforts illustrates the need for further efforts to monitor and improve water quality. This project was undertaken with the financial support of the Government of Canada through the Department of Environment and Climate Change.

Data Collection Information

A YSI probe multiparameter Sonde was used to collect in-situ data on physio-chemical parameters at all sampling locations. Between 61 to 77 sites, representing 43 watersheds, were sampled over three years from 2014-16. Canadian Aquatic Biomonitoring Network (CABIN) protocol was used at one location on the Waterford River from 2014-16.
