ACAP Saint John: Sediment PAHs

Map and Visualize

As part of DFO's Coastal Environmental Baseline Monitoring Program, ACAP Saint John has collected sediment samples in and around the Saint John Harbour since 2018. These sediment samples are analyzed for a suite of contaminants, known as PAHs (polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons). These data can be used for identifying contamination levels of sediments in the Saint John Harbour, and can also be used a baseline for future monitoring or restoration efforts.

Data Collection Information

Sediment samples were collected using a sediment sampler at 13 primary sites, plus 5 additional sites on occasion. Samples were generally collected 3 times a year. The sediment sampler was cleaned with 5% nitric acid before each sample. Samples are collected by pressing the sampler into the sediments until it hits the 5 cm mark, and then collecting the sample into a sample jar. Following collection, jars were kept frozen until they could be analyzed.

Data Collection Processing

Values were calculated from sample extractions, with a normal detection/reporting limit of 0.01 mg/kg.
