Great River Rapport Water Quality Data - Water Rangers

The Great River Rapport is a community-engaged, science-based ecosystem health report for the Upper St. Lawrence River, founded in partnership with the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne. The Great River Rapport uses advanced statistical methods, including complex modelling, to address community-driven research questions by integrating and analyzing large datasets from a variety of sources, including government, academic, private-sector, and open source/citizen science platforms. The project also promotes tech-based initiatives, including community science and stewardship apps, and employs a variety of digital and multi-media communications technologies, such as interactive online workshops, videos, infographics, and professional design expertise, to effectively translate and disseminate scientific and technical information to relevant groups and individuals. In promoting community science initiatives, the project has launched a Water Ranger kit lending program for the community to borrow kits free of charge to learn about water quality, connect with their local waterways, and contribute valuable water quality data.

Data Collection Information

All data were collected with the use of a Water Rangers kit. Measurements include water and air temperature, conductivity, pH (with pH strips and/or pH meter), alkalinity, chlorine, hardness, dissolved oxygen, secchi depth.

Data Disclaimer

Water Quality data is contributed by a variety of community scientists, including River Institute employees, summer students, and community volunteers. All participants take part in Water Rangers training online prior to testing water.
