Saint Lawrence River Basin Long-term Water Quality Monitoring Data
The Freshwater Quality Monitoring and Surveillance Program in the St. Lawrence River watershed is conducted by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) and through the Canada-Québec Water Quality Monitoring Agreement and the St. Lawrence Action Plan to assess the state of water quality and long-term trends, detect emerging problems, establish water quality guidelines, and track the effectiveness of remedial actions and regulatory decisions.

Data Collection Information

The water quality monitoring stations are established in water filtration plants, in a specialized infrastructure for sampling (water pumping system from the river bringing water to the infrastructure) and directly in the tributaries of the St. Lawrence River.
The raw water is sampled in containers previously conditioned and selected according to the parameters to be analyzed. The particulate phase of the water is sampled on a GF/F filter using a Teflon pump and a stainless steel filter holder, all cleaned beforehand.
Samples (aqueous and particulate phase) are analyzed for a wide range of substances including physico-chemical parameters, nutrients, metals and organic compounds in ECCC laboratories using methods accredited by the Canadian Association for Laboratory Accreditation (CALA) as well as in external laboratories.
