With climate change, increased population growth and proposed new housing developments that could affect the water quality of the Mossom and Schoolhouse Creek Watersheds and thereby the salmonids and biotic creek environment , our community based volunteer run BIMES Mossom Creek Hatchery initiated the Water Monitoring Program in the fall of 2019 to gives us baseline data if significant changes should happen for the parameters of water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, conductivity, total dissolved solids, ammonia, nitrates and phosphates by 2021.

Data Collection Information

The Oxyguard Polaris Portable meter measures the dissolved Oxygen and water temperature on site locations. Calibration is done just before taking measurements. About one liter of creek water on site is taken in lab bottles rinsed a few times with the creek water. The sample water is then taken back to the hatchery within 10 minutes to carry out the rest of the tests. We use the Oakton 35634 meter calibrated just before measurements for pH, Conductivity and TDS. Turbidity is measured using the Apera TN400 meter, calibrated just prior to testing. Nitrates, Phosphates and Ammonia are measured using the Hanna Multiparameter Photometer HI 83300 .

Data Collection Processing

Any apparent outliers with an unacceptably high difference in the parameters data record over two years of weekly or bimonthly measurements are removed or flagged and we repeat the test to verify. We also check with BC Guidelines for long term safe levels for that specific parameter.

Turbidity Values from the end of May 2022 to mid-September 2023 had to be deleted due to a late discovery that the calibrations fluids used were compromised in May 2022. Fresh fluid is now in use.
