Shubenacadie Watershed Environmental Protection Society - Soldier and Miller Lakes Monitoring Program (SWEPS)

Map and Visualize

Our concern over the Soldiers/Miller Lakes area arose from the Synoptic Survey of 2000 which identified increasing nutrients in both of these lakes. The Halifax Water sewage treatment facility in the Aerotech Park feeds into Soldiers Lake. Following is a link to the survey. http://www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/Library/328834.pdf Graphs and verbiage starting at page 32 indicate the problems with increasing ammonia, chlorophyll a and phosphorous. In addition to the point source inputs we will be setting stations to utilize the secchi disc during our testing.

Data Collection Information

A YSI probe (EXO2 MultiparameterSonde) is used to collect data on physio-chemical parameters at all sampling locations. Grab samples are taken to AGAT Laboratories for other analysis which vary depending on the site and budget constraints.
