Salt Spring Island FreshWater Catalogue (SSIFWC)

The Salt Spring Island, Water Preservation Society (WPS), FreshWater Catalogue (SSIFWC) project is about raising community awareness of an island’s freshwater (surface and groundwater), helping develop island watershed (stewardship) communities, and supporting data gathering for island freshwater resource quantification modelling and (locally) for water quality monitoring, to help inform island watershed preservation/management activities.

The datasets includes Db V3 and Db V2.

Data Collection Information

Our FreshWater Catalogue (SSIFWC) database contains freshwater data attributes (list below), from surface field locations, with information on the following Salt Spring Island freshwater data attributes collected at multiple island field locations:
- geographic location/freshwater feature type
- presence/absence of flow
- water quantity (l/sec), measurement technique, and associated parameters used for flow calculation
- water chemistry (pH, actual conductivity, specific conductivity and water temperature, with some dissolved oxygen records).

Locally the SSIFWC surface freshwater dataset is supplemented by shallow and deep well groundwater chemistry data.

Data Collection Processing

SSIFWC data are routinely checked for: coordinate location data, consistency in (seasonally variable) surface water chemistry data, appropriate measurement parameters for site flow determinations and flow calculations
