Friends of First Lake Water Quality Monitoring Data

The Friends of First lake Water Quality Monitoring project aims to build community partnerships, identify field sites and develop and implement sampling protocols for long term community based monitoring of First lake. Water quality data is collected through YSI portable water quality sensors and grab samples sent for laboratory analysis. This data is then compared to both historical data and the CCME water quality standards to help assess the lakes current water quality status and trends.

Data Collection Information

A YSI Professional plus probe is used to collect data on physical and chemical parameters at the deep water sampling locations(n=3). To assess other chemical parameters such as trace metals, nutrients, and major ions, four 500mL grab samples were collected at the deepest station. Samples were taken at the surface in Spring and Fall and at the surface, two times the Secchi depth, the thermocline and 2m from the bottom during the summer months. E. coli samples were taken from 8 locations around the lake and the ditch entering the lake, and were collected in 100mL sterile sample bottles.
