Ajax East and West storm sewers and Richmond Hill stormwater pond (Greater Toronto Area) water chemistry monitoring (2020-2022)

The data presented here are from just under two years of intensive sampling of stormwater in two sewersheds in Ajax and a stormwater pond in Richmond Hill. The sampled stormwater was then analyzed for a suite of chemistry parameters to give information about: the major anions, major cations, phosphorus (P) speciation (dissolved reactive P, total dissolved P, total P), dissolved organic and inorganic carbon, electrical conductivity, pH, nitrogen speciation (ammonium, nitrate, nitrite), total suspended solids, and road salt ions (sodium, chloride). This sampling was done in collaboration with the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority and the City of Richmond Hill as part of a Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Strategic Partnerships Grant.
The other organizations that supported the collection of this data by supporting site set up and/or site access were: the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority and the City of Richmond Hill.

Informations sur la collecte de données

At each of the 4 main sampling sites (Ajax West, Ajax East, Richmond Hill pond inlet, Richmond Hill pond outlet), ISCO auto samplers were programmed to collect stormwater samples during rain events. At the additional sampling sites (e.g., the water columns of the focus pond and a nearby pond, the 2 Rouge River sites), 1 L grab samples were collected. From the ISCO bottles, selected bottles representing the range of flow during the event were analyzed for a suite of chemical parameters. The samples were filtered for analysis of dissolved constituents as soon as possible after the samples were collected. All analytical chemistry equipment were carefully calibrated using multiple calibration standards and each set of data from each instrument were evaluated for QC/QA before being reported as a final result. The analytical chemistry equipment used for the analyses were:
For major cations (including total dissolved phosphorus): Inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) (Thermo Scientific iCAP 6300 with auto sampler)
For major anions (including chloride, nitrate, nitrite and sulfate): Capillary ion chromatograph (IC) system (Dionex ICS-5000)
For dissolved organic carbon and dissolved inorganic carbon: TOC analyzer (Shimadzu TOC-LCPH/CPN with auto injector)
For water isotopes: Picarro L2130-i Isotope (δ18O and δD for Isotopic H2O) and Gas Concentration Analyzer
For analysis of dissolved reactive phosphorus and ammonia/ammonium: Colourimetric methods (Thermo Scientific Gallery™ Discrete Analyzer)
For total phosphorus, calcium, manganese and iron: the persulfate digestion method of Dayton et al. (2017) was used followed by analysis of the digest by ICP-OES using matrix-matched calibration standards
Total suspended solids were analyzed by filtering around 100 mL of water samples onto Whatman GF/A filter paper (nominal pore size of 1.6 µm) and measuring the dry weight of the suspended material captured by the filter.
