EPCOR Environmental Monitoring Program (EMP) and Water Treatment Plant (WTP) Intakes

Carte et visualisation

EPCOR collects water quality data as part of the Environmental Monitoring Program (EMP) to monitor the impacts of the stormwater on the North Saskatchewan River and urban tributaries (creeks). Water quality from the North Saskatchewan River is monitored as it flows through Edmonton using existing raw water intakes. Urban creeks are monitored for water quality near the City limits and as they enter the North Saskatchewan River using grab samples. EPCOR’s two water treatment plants (E.L. Smith and Rossdale) also regularly monitor water quality in water taken from the North Saskatchewan River to characterize raw drinking water prior to treatment. Raw water is collected from the river mid-channel and is representative of water quality in the North Saskatchewan River.

Informations sur la collecte de données

As part of the EMP, water quality samples from the North Saskatchewan River are collected from raw water intakes at four facilities located along the river. The intakes are located at E.L. Smith (0 km), Rossdale (17 km downstream), Suncor (31 km downstream) and Dow Chemical (61 km downstream). Grab samples are collected from locations at each facility that are as close to the river as is reasonably practical, and are representative of water quality in the river. Water quality samples from urban creeks are collected as grab samples by either lowering a sampling container from a bridge, or using an extended pole sample from the bank or culvert. In the field, samples are analyzed for field parameters using a multi-parameter water quality probe that is calibrated prior to each sampling event. Water quality samples are submitted to accredited laboratories and are analyzed for a variety of parameters. Field splits and field blanks are regularly collected as part of an overall QA/QC program.

EPCOR’s two drinking water treatment plants (E.L. Smith and Rossdale) routinely analyze raw water quality samples from the North Saskatchewan River. Grab samples are collected from locations at each facility that are as close to the river as is reasonably practical, and are representative of water quality in the river. Water quality samples are either analyzed at on-site laboratories or are submitted to other accredited laboratories.
